In KS1 at Lift Green Way we teach writing using the Lift Schools KS1 Pilot Specification.
This is a well-resourced, sequential English programme based on high-quality core texts. During each unit, which typically takes 3 weeks, the children practise and acquire the key
knowledge and skills which gives them the tools to produce an extended piece of writing.
Each piece of writing focuses on one of the following writing forms:
Year One
Narrative
Setting description
Poem
Instructions
Persuasive letter
Year Two
Narrative
Setting description
Poem
Non-Chronological
Report
Persuasive advert
In KS2 at Lift Green Way we teach writing using the ARK English MyMastery scheme. This is a fully-resourced, sequential English programme which allows pupils to make at least good progress in writing.
During each unit, which typically takes 3 weeks, the children use the high quality text that they are studying in reading lessons to produce an extended piece of writing. Each piece focuses on one of four purposes:
- Describe
- Narrate
- Inform
- Persuade/analyse
The journey towards the end piece of writing is made up of lots of different and deliberate practice activities with pupils focusing attention on the precise skills and knowledge they are trying to master. Within the structure of the writing unit (see diagram) there is a balance of formative, shorter tasks (the practice), which give an immediate opportunity to gather feedback, reteach and review, and the summative, extended writing piece (the performance). These extended pieces are assessed against the year group objectives which helps us build a picture of how the children are
progressing.
